Default Coping with the workload

Going to graduate school is like taking on a second full time job if you are already a teacher. My best advice to you is to let friends and family know that there will be some changes to your regular routines for a while. You won't be able to make spontaneous trips to movies, shopping, etc. because of your study/work load. When you have class (whether on campus or on-line), that is your time and will not be skipped or shortened because of special events or activities. Making this clear up front helps a lot! Now, for yourself, one the otherhand. . .don't forget to schedule some "me" time so that you don't begin to resent the time your graduate work is taking from your life! Taking a break with a bath, a little TV, a walk, returning a phone call, etc. -- can help renew your resolve and keep you on track.

When I was studying for written comps, I had friends who took charge of my husband's social life! They took him to dinner or movies or ball games so I could study and so that he didn't resent my being too busy all the time.

I like your ideas about notifying friends and family. If everyone knows your goals, it makes it easier for them to support you.

I'm not in graduate school by any means but the workload can sometimes still feel overwhelming!

I'm in college part time two evenings a week, working full time and taking care of a household. Sometimes it feels like a walk in the park and some days it feels like I will never make it.

I'm working on some techniques to help myself:
1. Ask for help.
2. Say no to things that are above and beyond my regular scope of duties when school work is very heavy.
3. Be realistic - I ask myself if it's really as bad as it feels. E.g. is the house really as messy as I think.
4. Schedule time every day for school work so it isn't last minute cramming.

I'm far from perfect but I'm working on it!

Talking Re: Coping with the workload

In terms of housework, I like to remember that there's a huge difference between "messy" and "health hazard!"
