Default Is it possible the government could take a person's check to pay for a balance of back child

support? My friend owes me money and I wanted to know if he's making this up or if this could really happen.

Yes. My ex owed back child support and I used to get his Income Tax return check each year to go towards the past due balance.

Yes, wages can be garnished for non-payment of child support. Child support is considered a court judgement. In fact many states now have child support automatically deducted from paychecks.

Could be both. Yes, the Gov't can do it in some cases, but he could also be snowing you.

No, the government does not take a person's check. They garnish the person's wages and take a percentage of what they owe from their wages.

Yes. Most courts only allow a certain percentage to be taken but when the feds do it they take the entire balance until the owed money is paid off. The person could change it by going to court but that just costs more money.

Yes. The state can not legally take your whole check though. I think the max is 50% and that depends largely on how many kids he has.
